Today, we at T-COD Architecture want to talk about Renzo Piano, one of the pioneers of high-tech architecture. Who is Renzo Piano, the architect of Istanbul Modern? What is his architectural philosophy? What are his works? Let's take a look at the answers to these questions together.
WHO IS RENZO PIANO?
Born on September 14, 1937, in Genoa, the Italian architect was the son of a family involved in construction and contracting. Unlike his family, Piano chose to pursue design and studied architecture at the Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology in Switzerland. After graduating, he worked at a large architectural firm in Paris. Between 1965 and 1970, he worked for the world-renowned American architect Louis Kahn. A recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Piano is one of the world's most famous living architects. Although primarily an architect, his mastery of engineering has allowed him to showcase his unique style in design. A world-renowned architect, Renzo Piano has received numerous awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the RIBA Gold Medal, the Italian Presidential Cultural Honor Award, and Japan's Praemium Imperiale Award. Piano has many famous works bearing his signature in various parts of the world.
RENZO PIANO'S ARCHITECTURAL PHILOSOPHY
Renzo Piano is a representative of the deconstructivism movement in architecture, which is based on the principle of dismantling and reassembling what has already been built. He used patterns he created himself as the basis of his designs and blended these patterns with structural elements. He is known as one of the world's most famous museum designers, particularly due to his interest in and sensitive approach to museums. Believing that good architecture has the power to improve people's lives, Piano prioritized sustainability and the use of environmentally friendly technologies in his designs. From the 1970s to the 1990s, Piano's design approach evolved from hi-tech to an ecological approach. The California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, which began with Piano's idea of "removing a part of the park and placing a building underneath," is considered "the world's greenest museum" thanks to Piano's design. It focuses particularly on reducing energy consumption and protecting the environment by using technologies such as rooftop gardens, solar panels, and rainwater harvesting systems.
