THE FIRST RECIPIENT OF THE PRITZKER ARCHITECTURE PRIZE: PHILIP JOHNSON

THE FIRST WINNER OF THE PRITZKER ARCHITECTURE PRIZE: PHILIP JOHNSON

Today, we at T-COD Architecture want to talk about Philip Johnson, a world-renowned American architect. Johnson, who left his mark on the history of world architecture, played a significant role in both introducing international styles and defining postmodernist architecture. Let's take a look at his architectural vision and works.

WHO IS PHILIP JOHNSON?

One of the most influential figures in architecture, Philip Johnson was born in Cleveland, USA, in 1906. He received his architectural education at Harvard University and in 1930 founded the Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York. Johnson was not only a figure with architectural expertise; he also studied history and philosophy at Harvard University. He also undertook many trips to Europe to broaden his perspective on life. These travels played an influential role in his choice of architecture as a profession. But the event that truly changed his life occurred in 1928 when he met Mies van der Rohe. He was utterly captivated by Rohe's modernist style. This influence is clearly visible in the Glass House, which brought him worldwide fame.

GLASS HOUSE

The Glass House, built as a self-contained home, is characterized by a design dominated by simplicity and spatial unity. The building's facades are made of glass and charcoal-colored steel. The interior spaces are separated by low-rise walnut cabinets. Brick is used only in the bathroom. Opposite the Glass House is a guest house with a brick facade. The building is the first of 14 structures designed by Johnson for his private property. Today, it is protected by the National Commission for Historic Preservation and is open to the public. Some of Philip Johnson's other significant works include: • Kneses Tifereth Synagogue

• Williams Tower

• Boston Public Library

• New York State Pavilion

• AT&T Building AWARDS In 1978, he received a gold medal from the American Institute of Architects. He received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, considered the most prestigious award in the architectural world, for the first time in 1979. He was described by the jury as "an architect who makes consistent and meaningful contributions to humanity and the environment."
