WITH ITS SYNTHESIS ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURE OF EAST AND WEST: PERA PALACE HOTEL

As T-COD Architecture, this week we would like to tell you about Pera Palace Hotel, which has a very important place in the history of Istanbul. Let's take a look at the history and achitectural structure of Pera Palace.

PERA PALACE HOTEL HISTORY

After the ''Great Pera Fire'', which destroyed a large part of BeyoÄŸlu, BeyoÄŸlu entered a major transformation process with ''Reconstruction''. Although it took a while, it was reborn from the ashes with more durable, sculptured and carved building types made of much higher quality materials. Pera Palace Hotel, Turkey's first hotel of European standards, designed by architect Alexander Vallaury and opened its doors in 1895, has the status of a first-degree historical monument. It is a very important landmark in Türkiye and on international platforms as it has witnessed many important events in Istanbul. Pera Palace Hotel is the first building to have electricity, the first electric elevator, and the first running hot water outside the Ottoman palaces.

PERA PALACE HOTEL ARCHITECTURAL UNDERSTANDING

Pera Palace Hotel has an architectural structure that is a synthesis of east and west. Neoclassical, Art Nauveau and Orientalist architectural styles were used together. This view of Pera Palace Hotel, which looks like a monumental building from the outside, is a reflection of the neoclassical understanding. The hotel's plan was designed with a rational-functional approach, and wood, glass and marble materials were used throughout.

PERA PALACE HOTEL ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

The plan of the hotel and its four facades, all of which are designed differently from each other, are designed with a symmetrical approach. An orientalist approach was adopted in its primary spaces and interior decoration. The place where the orientalist approach is most clearly observed is the Domed Hall. The plan of the entire building was determined according to this hall. This hall, which is the heart of the hotel, is a large and spacious hall on the ground floor. The hotel's secondary spaces reflect the Art Nouveau architectural style in areas such as stair railings and elevators. Art Nouveau style floral motifs were used on the elevator cabin, elevator entrance and stair railings. Likewise, the floral patterns and gilded plaster decorations used on the walls of Pera Hall are other architectural features of the hotel.

Pera Palace Hotel is still in service today with its rich history, strong architecture, world-famous names it hosts and its firsts in Turkey. The hotel, which hosted Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and other world-famous names, has made a name for itself in many areas, from books by famous authors to platforms such as Netflix. It continues to dazzle today with its impressive architecture.
