LIGHTING DESIGN IN OPEN OFFICES: ITS EFFECT ON EYE COMFORT AND MOOD

As T-COD Architecture, this week we will talk about the importance of lighting design in open offices. In order to use the flexibility and communication advantages offered by open offices in the most efficient way, correct lighting planning plays a major role. Let's explore lighting solutions that increase employee comfort and productivity more closely together. Open offices; They stand out as modern workspaces that support collaboration, communication and flexibility. However, one of the most important details ignored in these areas is lighting design. Lighting not only illuminates the space; It has a direct impact on employees' eye health, mood and even productivity. In this article, we discuss how to design effective lighting in open offices, what to pay attention to, and our approach on this issue as T-COD Architecture.

THE EFFECT OF LIGHTING ON HUMANS

Research shows that; Insufficient or incorrectly positioned lighting causes employees to experience eye fatigue, headaches and distraction. Additionally, when a light color similar to daylight is used, the mood of employees is positively affected. Lighting is not just a technical detail; A psychological and physiological element.

THE POWER OF NATURAL LIGHT

Increasing the use of natural light whenever possible in open offices provides a great advantage in terms of employee health. With large windows, transparent partitions and reflective surfaces, natural light can spread more deeply inside. You can also use light more efficiently by choosing light tones instead of light-absorbing dark walls.

USE OF LAYERED LIGHTING

A single source of general illumination is often insufficient. Instead, layered lighting systems should be preferred:

1.General lighting: Provides equal light to the entire area.

2.Task lighting: Focused light for desktop work (such as desk lamps).

3. Accent lighting: Used for decorative and guiding purposes. This triple balance ensures that the open office remains balanced both functionally and aesthetically.

LIGHT COLOR TEMPERATURE AND BRIGHTNESS LEVEL

The preferred color temperature for ideal lighting in open offices is generally around 4000K. This is a shade close to daylight and supports both focus and comfort. Additionally, a minimum brightness level of 500 lux is recommended throughout the office. However, these values should be adjustable according to work areas. It is possible to optimize lighting according to need, thanks to sensor systems, daylight-sensitive automatic dimming features and timers. This provides a sustainable approach and increases employee comfort.

Especially in our open office projects, we not only let in natural light in the most efficient way, but also offer task-oriented and user-configurable lighting solutions. In open office designs; We take care to create flexible, creative and functional spaces. Taking into account the different needs of employees, we design both quiet areas where they can focus and open and dynamic areas where they can work together. Our solutions, which let in plenty of natural light, combine with ergonomic furniture and modular arrangements, making the office environment more enjoyable and efficient. In every project, we pay attention to striking a balance that supports both individual and collaborative work culture.
