A SYNTHESIS OF EAST AND WEST ARCHITECTURAL STRUCTURE: PERA PALACE HOTEL

A Synthesis of East and West in its Architecture:

The Pera Palace Hotel This week, T-COD Architecture wants to tell you about the Pera Palace Hotel, which holds a very important place in the history of Istanbul. Let's take a look at the history and architectural structure of the Pera Palace together.

HISTORY OF THE PERA PALACE HOTEL

Following the "Great Pera Fire," which destroyed a large part of Beyoğlu, the district underwent a major transformation through "reconstruction." Although it took some time, it was reborn from the ashes with much higher quality materials, more solid, sculptural, and carved building types. Designed by architect Alexander Vallaury and opened in 1895, the Pera Palace Hotel, Turkey's first hotel built to European standards, is a first-degree historical monument. Having witnessed many important events in Istanbul, it is a very important landmark in Turkey and on international platforms. The Pera Palace Hotel is notable for being the first building outside of the Ottoman palaces to have electricity, the first electric elevator, and the first running hot water.

PERA PALACE HOTEL ARCHITECTURAL PHILOSOPHY

The Pera Palace Hotel boasts an architectural structure that synthesizes East and West. Neoclassical, Art Nouveau, and Orientalist architectural styles are used together. Its monumental appearance from the outside reflects the neoclassical approach. The hotel's overall design, based on a rational and functional approach, utilizes wood, glass, and marble materials.

PERA PALACE HOTEL ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES

The hotel's plan and its four distinctly designed facades are based on a symmetrical design. An Orientalist approach has been adopted in its primary spaces and interior decoration. The most prominent example of this Orientalist approach is the Domed Hall. The entire building's plan is based on this hall. This hall, the heart of the hotel, is a large and spacious hall on the ground floor. The hotel's secondary spaces, stair railings, and elevators reflect the Art Nouveau architectural style. Art Nouveau-style plant motifs are used in the elevator cabin, elevator entrance, and stair railings. Similarly, the plant patterns and gilded plaster decorations used on the walls of the Pera Hall are other architectural features of the hotel. Pera Palace Hotel, with its rich history, strong architecture, world-renowned guests, and pioneering achievements in Turkey, continues to serve today. Having hosted Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and other world-famous figures, the hotel has made a name for itself in many areas, from books by famous authors to platforms like Netflix. Its impressive architecture continues to dazzle today.
