FRANK GEHRY'S UNDERSTANDING OF ARCHITECTURE

Frank Gehry, one of the leading practitioners of Deconstructivism in architecture, is considered one of the most important living architects. Frank Gehry, one of the most popular contemporary American architects, used recognizable forms in an innovative style. In his early works, he was always inspired by the rapid development and artificiality of Los Angeles, the city in which he was based. In his works, he used an elegant style inspired by classical themes and violent Modernism. He has become so famous for his works that various cities around the world order Frank Gehry to promote tourism. He has created distinctive works that combine curvilinear forms with his deconstructivist style. He won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 1989 with his ''Monica Place'' design. He received the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 1999. He also dealt with furniture design as well as architecture, and was known for the chairs he created by bending wide wooden strips.

FRANK GEHRY ARCHITECTURAL WORKS

Frank Gehry's line of architecture has shifted from a commercial practice to an artistically oriented workshop. Dancing House (Prague, Czech Republic), Vitra Design Museum (Weil am Rhein, Germany), Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao, Spain) are some of his works.

VITRA DESIGN MUSEUM (WEIL AM RHEIN,GERMANY,1987-1989)

This building, which attracts a lot of attention as a tourist, is designed by Frank Gehry. Vitra Design Museum, a private museum, was founded in 1989 as an independent charitable organization by Rolf Fehlbaum, CEO of Vitra Furniture. It spreads over a total area of 8000 m2 on 2 floors and consists of a series of simple boxes in a complex composition. Only white plaster and a titanium-zinc alloy were used in this construction. The structure attracts attention with its complex formal understanding.

DANCING HOUSE (PRAGUE,CZECH REPUBLIC,1992-1996)

It was designed in collaboration with Vlado Milunic, an architect of Croatian and Czech origin, and Frank Gehry, in an empty area located on the river bank. Designed to be a visual focal point, one of these two towers is cylindrical and massive, while the other is thin, tall and glass. The facade of the glass tower consists of double-layer glass with steel carriers. The strycture, which has become popular culture due to its form, is also called Fred and Ginger because it is dedicated to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and symbolizes two dancing partners.

GUGGENHEIM museum (BILBAO,SPAIN,1991-1997)

The building, which spans an are of 11,000 m2, was completed in 1997. It is one of the most striking among the recent projects designed by Gehry. The museum walls, made similar to paper, are curved. The annual number of guests of  the museum, which focuses on 20th century contemporary art, is around 1 million.

SUNA KIRAÇ CULTURAL CENTER (ISTANBUL)

The project, which is of great importance as it is Frank Gehry's first and only project in Turkey, was not implemented even though it was aimed to be completed in 2010.
